The latestElden Ringpatch is repeating history.Elden Ringversion 1.14 was released on July 12, 2025,across all platforms. This is the second major update forElden Ringsince the release of its first and only DLC,Shadow of the Erdtree, and a relatively simple one overall. According to itspatch notes, most of its improvements focus on adjusting and rebalancing, especially as regardsShadow of the Erdtree’s bosses.

Elden Ringpatches are known for reinventing the wheel, but that’s not because they make such enormous, sweeping changes; rather, it’s because every aspect of the game is so fine-tuned that the slightest tweak can turn one ofElden Ring’s hardest boss battlesinto a cakewalk. The pre- and post-patch versions of the same boss can play like two completely different fights, and the pre-patch versions often become notorious for their relative difficulty. FromSoftware fans are no stranger to this sort of thing - it’s just unusual that it’s happened to the same guy twice.

Elden Ring Patch 1.14 Nerfs Radahn - Again

Consort Radahn Goes The Way Of Starscourge Radahn

Elden Ring’s latest patch nerfs the final boss ofShadow of the Erdtree,Promised Consort Radahn, in much the same way an earlier patch nerfedStarscourge Radahn. Promised Consort Radahn (along with his second form Radahn, Consort of Miquella) has been nerfed across three categories: general damage, stamina damage, and attack range. In addition, Radahn’s attack pattern at the beginning of battle has changed, possibly meaning he’ll be a little less likely to fire off ranged blasts the second the player crosses the fog wall.

It’s Time To Admit You Were Wrong About Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was criticized for being difficult at launch, but now the dust has settled, it’s clear it isn’t actually that hard.

The visibility of some of his attack effects has also been increased, which may make it easier to see some of his swings incoming. This parallels the earlier nerf ofStarscourge Radahn, the same character’s original form in the base game. Radahn was infamously done dirty by patch 1.03. Released in April 2022, this patch decreased both his attack damage and the size of his hitboxes.

Damage nerfs to Radahn were later reverted in version 1.03.03, but the hitbox nerfs remain to this day.

In previous versions, Radahn’s sword hitboxes were admittedly larger than they should have been, and would often hit players even if they were miles away from the arc of his blades. Couple that with his increased damage prior to the patch, andStarscourge Radahn was a much deadlier boss then than he is today.

Beating Pre-Nerf Radahn Has Become A Badge Of Honor - Again

Players Brag About Beating Pre-Nerf Consort Radahn

Starscourge Radahn’s nerf came fairly early in the days ofElden Ring’s release, soonly a select few players were able to beat the more difficult version prior to patch 1.03. Whether a player had the chance to fight pre-nerf Radahn mostly came down to a convergence of factors: when they started the game, how much time they devoted to it, and the order in which they chose to challenge the shardbearers.

For many who achieved this lucky coincidence, however, beating pre-nerf Starscourge Radahn became a badge of honor. These players would take to social media and speak in the manner of grizzled veterans, recounting their glorious victories in battle and decrying the post-patch generation for being too soft.

After Elden Ring DLC, I Don’t Want FromSoftware’s Next Game To Be A Soulslike

Although Shadow of the Erdtree is possibly FromSoftware’s best work yet, I think the studio’s next release should step away from the Soulslike genre.

Now, history is repeating itself again, with many players bragging of having defeatedPromised Consort Radahnprior to this most recent nerf. It’s been a little bit longer sinceShadow of the Erdtreecame out (three months to patch 1.14, compared to the two-month difference between launch and patch 1.03), and the DLC is significantly shorter, so the pre-nerf Consort Radahn beaters make up a slightly bigger cohort.

But the bravado is the same, and the coincidence of Radahn getting majorly nerfed twice is not lost on many of these players. To be fair, beating pre-nerf Consort Radahn is an impressive achievement.Shadow of the Erdtree’s final boss has been widely considered the most difficult inElden Ringsince the DLC’s launch, so at least a little pride is justified.

Whatever the case, it seems like FromSoft has moved on from poison swamps; its new obsession is nerfing Radahn. It’s hard to say whether Radahn will actually maintain his crown as the most difficult boss inElden Ring; only time will tell as players begin to face the newly nerfed version of the DLC’s final boss, and are able to compare and contrast.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is a popular game released by From Software, creators of games such as Armored Core, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne. Players assume the role of a Tarnished, a being once exiled to the Lands Between and has returned to repair the Elden Ring after the events of “The Shattering.” “The Shattering” occurred when the offspring of Queen Marika battled to claim the shards of the Elden Ring, known as Great Runes. Their war has brought lawlessness, destruction, and chaos to the land, and the player will challenge them with the assistance of a Maiden known as Melina as they travel towards the great Erd Tree to face their destiny and to become the one true Elden Lord. Players can tackle the game how they choose and can adventure across realms as they build their character how they want - be it a powerful magic caster or a brutal swordsman - they will have complete control over their build.
