WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 2!InDexter: Original Sinseason 1, episode 2, a fan-favorite character from the original series returns, but her appearance also provides a sad reminder of her tragic fate that’s tied to Dexter. There are several majororiginalDextercharacters who return inOriginal Sinas younger versions of themselves, but, sadly, not all of them made it out of the main series alive. For instance, while Harry Morgan, Maria LaGuerta, Debra Morgan, and Camilla Figg are once again familiar faces inOriginal Sin, they all ultimately die byDexterseason 8’s ending.

Though Deb and Maria’s deaths occur late in the original show’s later seasons,Camilla Figg tragically dies quite early in the thriller series. As such, it’s bittersweet to see her character back again inDexter: Original Sin’s cast, especially through her kind and loving interactions with young Dexter whenever he goes to sort through the files at Miami Metro. As touching as these moments are between young Dexter and Camilla inOriginal Sin, it’s difficult not to remember where their close relationship ends about 17 years later.

Dexter Reluctantly Euthanizes Camilla After She Begs Him To End Her Suffering

Camilla is among the few people inDexterwho knows the truth about Dexter’s backstory with Laura Moser and Harry’s efforts to hide it from him. However, she loves both Dexter and Harry, and believes that it was all for the best. Though Dexter becomes angry at the two for having lied to him about his past, he and Camilla still maintain a close connection untilDexterseason 3, when he learns that she’s extremely ill. Sadly, it’s revealed thatCamilla has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, which her husband had just died from the year before.

Camilla continued to beg Dexter to euthanize her and end her suffering, but his Code wouldn’t allow him to kill an innocent friend.

While Dexter continued to visit Camilla in the hospital throughoutDexterseason 3, they began to have more discussions about death and dying. One conversation that really affected Dexter had to do with Camilla stating that she had made peace with the idea of dying, but she couldn’t stand the pain. When Camilla was moved to hospice, she told Dexter that she hoped she wouldn’t want to be alive much longer, and wanted to die sooner than later. Eventually,Camilla told Dexter that death would be “a mercy,”and told him about how her husband wanted her to euthanize him.

Camilla continued to beg Dexter to euthanize her and end her suffering, but his Code wouldn’t allow him to kill an innocent friend. Later,Dexter finally agreed to give Camilla a mercy kill by putting euthanizing drugs inside the “perfect” key lime pie slice, for which she thanked him. In their final moments together, Camilla also commended Dexter for killing his brotherBrian Moser, aka the Ice Truck Killer, making these events all the more tragic given she always knew who Dexter was and still accepted him.

Camilla Was An Important Parental Figure In Dexter’s Upbringing & Adulthood

Though Dexter’s Dark Passenger has always given him an urge to kill and seek blood from others, he has his limits. For instance, young Dexter is severely affected by the harm against Jimmy Powell inDexter: Original Sinseason 1, episode 2, as he can’t stomach the idea of hurting children.

Additionally,Dexter would never want to kill someone who he deeply loves and cares for when they don’t fit the Code. He had to kill Brian because he fit the Code of Harry, but killing someone like Camilla, an innocent who loved him, was something he couldn’t fathom doing.

Additionally, inDexterseason 3, Camilla was the closest person Dexter had to a parental figure. Harry, Doris, and Laura all died, and Dexter had even recently lost his biological father, Joe Driscoll, after the Ice Truck Killer murdered him.Camilla, meanwhile, was a close friend of the Morgans and had served as a mother figure to Dextersince beforeDexter: Original Sin’s timeline. When the two interact inOriginal Sin, that loving dynamic is shown even further, such as Camilla helping guide Dexter through his social struggles after he tries to win the station’s favor with a vegetable tray.

Camilla’s Death Tragically Foreshadowed Dexter Mercy Killing Deb In The Original Show’s Finale

Dexter Gave Debra A Similar Mercy Kill In The Original Series Finale

Camilla’s death was the first time that Dexter did a mercy killing for his loved ones throughout his killing career – but it wouldn’t be the last. When Dexter was going to visit Camilla inDexterseason 3, Deb refused to join him because seeing sick people reminded her of their mother. When the two were talking about Camilla’s pain while dying on a breathing tube in a hospital,Deb told Dexter that if she ever got like that, she would want him to euthanize herin some way.

Dexter’s New Prequel Is Making Debra Morgan Much More Sympathetic Than The Original Show Ever Did

Debra Morgan is one of the best characters across the Dexter shows, but Original Sin has accomplished the impressive task of making her even better.

Tragically,Deb foreshadowed her own deathin this moment, as she would end up on life support in a coma after being shot by Oliver Saxon inDexter’s original series ending. When it became clear that the chances of Deb coming back were almost nonexistent,Dexter reluctantly decided to grant his sister’s earlier wish, just as he had for Camilla. In the 2013 series finale, Dexter pulls the plug on Deb’s life support and buries her at sea, becoming one of his most tragic kills alongside Camilla long after his serial killing begins inDexter: Original Sin.
