InDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #16, as the mothership slowly descended to the Earth, giant hands appeared in the sky and created giant rifts of light in Japan and other parts of the world. Mysterious bubbles started spilling out from the rifts, and while they appeared innocuous, anyone and anything that touched the bubble would see the part that touched it instantly destroyed in a bloody explosion. This was both a clear side effect of the mothership’s imminent collapse and a prelude to the state of things inDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #0.

With barely any time left, Oba made his way to the mothership to put an end to things, only to be attacked by Kohiruimaki, who wanted the apocalypse to play out so he could take over the country in the aftermath. The invaders on the mothership, convinced that Oba was one of them, fought off Kohiruimaki and let Oba inside. From there, Oba used Isobeyan’s password to shut down the engine, but unfortunately,Oba was too late to stop the mothership from exploding and only managed to make it slightly less catastrophic than it could have been.

As that was going on, the Occult Research Club slowly made their way back to Tokyo, with Makoto leaving earlier to go back to her parents’ house. When the group took a break at a rest stop, Oran, remembering some of her past on a subconscious level, asked Kadode what she would do if everything with the invaders was her fault, and when Kadode said she’d still be on her side, Oran spontaneously kissed her out of relief. The two joked around some more after that, and as they did,the mothership crashed into Tokyo and released a massive explosion.

Kadode and Oran in episode 16

In an extended sequence reminiscent ofThe End of Evangelion, the majority ofDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionis killed in a gruesome explosion while a song about the end of the world plays in the background, and even those who weren’t at ground zero are still visibly traumatized by it all. Despite that, however, Kadode and Oran both monologue about the strange sense of relief they feel, and even with the world ending, they’re both confident that things will be okay as long as they have each other.

Amidst all the death and destruction inDead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructionepisode #16, the episode never failed to highlight the true emotional core of the series: Kadode and Oran’s relationship. Even when the series dips into more dramatic writing, it’s always quick to bring things back to Kadode and Oran’s dynamic, and sure enough,Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destructioncontrasting the end of the world with Kadode and Oran’s bond emphasizes where the priority of the story has always been. Their relationship has always been why the story works, and it’s great that it never fails to remember that.
