Sorry, Zatanna, But John Constantine Has Set His Sights on a Different Justice Leaguer

Was John Genuinely Flirting Black Canary or Just Being a Jerk?

The scene between Constantine and Black Canary sees Dinah seeking John out for answers regarding rumors about a child conceived by vampires. John shares some of the rumors but ultimately dismisses them, stating that the child isn’t real. Dinah presses him, asking him to consider the possibility that the child might actually exist. Frustrated by his failed magic and intoxicated, John snaps, telling Dinah to stop chasing rumors and picking fights“with that idiot with the bow”and start actually helping people like he is. Rightfully offended,Dinah storms off with an emphatic“#@&* you, John Constantine,”to which he responds,“I’d love that.”

John’s comment that he’d love to sleep with Dinah is likely another attempt to antagonize her. However, the emphasis on“love”hints that, despite using the comment to push her buttons, he’d actually be more than willing to follow through if given the chance—regardless of her relationship with Oliver Queen. This behavior is typical for Constantine, who thrives in morally gray areas and has no qualms about making inappropriate advances. Yet, no matter how clear his interest is, this so-called"romance"is bound to remain one-sided—especially with Dinah looking like she’s ready to feed him to the vampires.

John Constantine Is Ready For His First Serious MLM Relationship

Although Dinah is unlikely to be John’s true match, their interaction raises an important point—DC should make efforts to diversify Constantine’s dating pool. While romance in John’s stories typically revolves around Zatanna, who is a fantastic choice, it would be refreshing to see him explore a relationship with someone different, especially another male character, given Constantine’s bisexuality. Despite multiple mentions of his bisexuality since its introduction inHellblazer#51 in 1992 by John Smith, DC has yet to give him a serious romance with a man. A genuine men-who-love-men relationship would be a new and exciting exploration ofJohn Constantine’scharacter.
