Sean Gunn & Zoë Chao Preview G.I. Robot, Weasel & Nina Mazursky In Creature Commandos Season 1

ScreenRant: I watched these five episodes on the loop for the last couple of days. This show is so much fun, and you guys should be very proud. Zoë, we see a reluctant sisterhood between Nina and Bride. Is that how you see it, and how does it evolve throughout the rest of the season?

Zoë Chao: Yeah, that’s a good way to describe it. They are an unlikely duo, but it makes sense, sort of, in the Motley misfit crew that they would [connect.] They both are so familiar with tragedy and trauma, and I think they’re the only ladies of the group. So, yeah, they form an unexpected alliance, but I’m really happy that, actually, that they do find each other, and I’m happy that Nina also finds G.I. Robot, because she spent her whole life not really belonging anywhere, and she’s found her crew.

Creature Commandos' Zoë´Chao On Being A Newcomer To The DC Universe

“Oh man, as someone who’s new to comics and new to DCU, how much of a scholar do I have to become to play this part responsibly?”

You’re one of the newer players in this franchise. Do you have a full background on everything Nina has gone through prior to what we see of her inCreature Commandosor did you learn more about it as the plot goes along as you were getting script by script?

Zoë Chao: We got all of our scripts at the same time, so it was such a treat. We got seven scripts, and I just tore through them and then reread them again, which rarely happens that, because they’re just so juicy. It was cool. I was nervous going in before getting the scripts. I was like, ‘Oh man, as someone who’s new to comics and new to DCU, how much of a scholar do I have to become to play this part responsibly?’ But what was such a relief was that each script, there’s just so much information, and James is the scholar, and we are in such great, responsible and steady hands that I just got to dive into what was written for us and those the answers were there.

Sean Gunn: I want to jump in and just say too: one of the unique things about the story, I think, is that it’ll be really awesome to watch it week-to-week, starting December 5, but if you want to, you can wait till the end, and you could binge it as one, like a 3 and a half-hour movie, which is a long movie, granted, but it really works in both ways.

Zoë Chao: As someone who doesn’t know anything about the DCU and is now excited to learn much more because of this series, you don’t have to have any prior knowledge to really just get immersed. I think that’s so special about this show, and the way that James writes is that there’s really something for everybody. There’s someone that the people who are deep into the world are going to have just a feast, but also people who are coming to this material for the first time are going to be like, ‘Yes, sign me up!’

[Sees Chao holding up her Nina Funko! Pop figure] What’s that like, having yourself as an action figure now?

Zoë Chao: It’s so cool! I met a lot of these guys two weeks ago, and they all have had Funkos for a while, but this is my first Funko, and I could not imagine a cooler vessel. She’s rad. This is her little water tank helmet and her water suit, this is her collar. And when she eats, she has to put food in a shoot that then the food goes into her water tank helmet, and then she eatsit like that.

Sean Gunn & Zoë Chao On Their Creature Commandos Characters' Throughline In The DCU

“All of the Creature Commandos have a sense of feeling like outsiders who need somewhere to belong.”

What would you say is the throughline for your characters, both in and outside the events of Creature Commandos?

Sean Gunn: I think that all of the Creature Commandos have a sense of feeling like outsiders who need somewhere to belong, and that’s true of both Weasel and G.I. Robot, for me. There’s nothing else like them, and they just want to belong and to be somewhere that’s safe. I think that’s true of almost all of us in the show.

Zoë Chao: I think she spent her whole life trying to fit in somewhere or be accepted or claimed by some beings. I guess the arc for this motley crew of monsters is that they come together, and it’s like, ‘Why are we all here?’ We’re here because we’re doing work that’s deemed too dangerous for humans. So we’re the last resort, we’re your worst option and nobody really gets along. But through the course of the season, you learn that they are all bonded by a deep understanding or familiarity with tragedy, and maybe this is the family that they’ve all kind of needed.
