TheCall of Duty: Black Ops 6beta has seemingly removed a reference to 9/11.Call of Dutyis a franchise that is notorious for including harrowing and controversial content in its campaign. InCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, players partake in a mass shooting at a Russian airport and kill countless civilians, sparking World War 3. Subsequent entries include more brutal terrorist attacks, torture, war crimes, and more. It’s a series known for not pulling its punches and theBlack Opsgames really lean into this due to viewing key parts of history through the lens of conspiracies.

Over the weekend,Call of Duty:Black Ops 6beta players discovered a calling card that seemed to feature images of former President George W. Bush and a plane hitting the World Trade Center on 9/11. The latter image appeared to be from the perspective of someone looking up at the building from the ground and witnessing the plane hitting the side of the tower. However, X (formerly Twitter) userTheGhostofHopenoticed after a beta patch that Treyarch had removed these images with a revised version of the calling card.

Was Black Ops 6 Going to Depict 9/11?

The Series Is Known For Historical Fiction

Earlier this year, players began speculating that 9/11 would be depicted inCall of Duty: Black Ops 6due to imagery and language in marketing material. This was quickly shut down by Treyarch when press went topreviewBlack Ops 6earlier this summerandthe developer bluntly stated that the story would not feature the September 11 attacks. Associate design director Matt Scronce noted toPCGamerat the time that “Black Ops 6, like every other Black Ops game, is purely fictional.” However, this artwork is once again drumming up speculation that the game will touch on 9/11. It seems unlikely given how direct Treyarch was in its denial, but perhaps it was considered at one point.

It’s possible thatCall of Duty: Black Ops 6intended to utilize the 9/11 attacks as a plot point at one point in its development.Black Ops 6has been in development for four years and will tackle the Gulf War in its campaign, meaningthe story will be set in the 1990s. There’s a chance that at one point the story would’ve bled into the early 2000s and this artwork was leftover from that period of the game’s development. TheCall of Duty: Black Opsseries has previously re-framed historical events through its story, with the first game heavily implying Alex Mason was responsible for John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

Black Ops 6, like every otherBlack Opsgame, is purely fictional.

As of right now, players shouldn’t expect to see the tragic 2001 terrorist attack featured inCall of Duty: Black Ops 6. It’s unclear why this artwork overtly depicted 9/11 if it’s not a part of the game at all, but things may become clearer when the game launches later this year.Call of Duty: Black Ops 6will still feature real life people and events, as then GovernorBill Clinton has been confirmed to be in the game’s campaignas the host of a gala prior to his presidency.
