In theStar Warsuniverse, the Mandalorians are known for their warrior nature and fighting spirit – andperhaps their most fearsome weapon ever is the Mythosaur axe. Introduced in aclassic comic book story from the old “Legends” canon, the Mythosaur axe is an impressive feat of craftsmanship, which makes the Mandos' affinity for jetpacks, beskar armor, and the infamous Darksaber pale in comparison.

1995’sStar Wars: Tales of the Jedi - The Sith War#1 – written by Kevin J. Anderson, with art by Dario Carrasco Jr. – introduced the Mythosaur axe, which remains a fan-favorite aspect of Mandalorian lore among longtime fans of the franchise.

The legendary Mythosaur is a massive animal from ancient Mandalorian history, but that had long since been thought to be extinct in the New Republic era. Mythosaurs remained important, as the image of the animal became a symbol synonymous with Mandalorian culture, which is why a weapon like the Mythosaur axe is held in high regard by Mandalorians.

The Mythosaur axe’s blade wasmade out of sharpened, calcified bones of the creature, and thus is considered one of the most revered weapons in Mandalorian culture. The first time a Mythosaur axe appears inStar Warslore is during a battle between Mandalore the Indomitable anda Sith, Ulic Qel-Droma. In the ancientStar Warsgalaxy, Mandalorians continued to fight against the Sith, even after their defeat and relocation to a planet that wasn’t their homeworld. To end the squabble, Qel-Droma challenged Mandalore to single combat; though Qel-Droma won, Mandalore put up an impressive fight with his Mythosaur axe.

The only mention of the Mythosaur axe existing in Disney’s current canonStar Warsuniverse is in the roleplaying game,Age of Rebellion: Friends Like These, and the dice card game,Star Wars: Destiny, both published in 2016 by Fantasy Flight Games. In the adventure book and on the TTRPG cards, there is a Mandalorian character named Vera Beroya, who is depicted with a Mythosaur axe. In gameplay, when Beroya does not have any ammunition in her automatic weapons, she uses her Mythosaur axe to fight.

The Mythosaur Axe Is Too Impressive Not To Appear In Future Star Wars Multimedia Stories

A Live-Action Appearance InThe Mandalorian & GroguIs Possible

In 2014, Lucasfilm stated that anyStar Warscontent outside the movies andStar Wars: The Clone Warsseries was no longer canon. This led to the extensive Expanded Universe (EU) beingrebranded as the “Legends” continuity, which includes anything published before 2014. AlthoughTales of the Jedi - The Sith Warfalls into the Legends category, the Mythosaur axe has already been been brought into current canon, and is certain to appear more extensively in the future. It’s also possible that Vera Beroya will eventually make an appearanceinStar Warsmedia outside the RPG games.

With the number of prominent Mandalorian characters in the current canon – including Din Djarin, Bo-Katan Kryze, and Sabine Wren – it would be satisfying for the Mythosaur axe to be adapted into live-action.
