Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Bad Monkey season 1, episode 10!Bad MonkeyTV show creator Bill Lawrence has addressed the possibility of a season 2 at Apple TV+, discussing the future potential of the show based on Carl Hiaasen’s book.Bad Monkeyhas received critical acclaimfor its accuracy to Hiaasen’s novel, a strong performance from Vince Vaughn as former detective Andrew Yancy, and plenty of sharp humor weaved into its ongoing mystery. The story is derived from the author’s 2013 novel of the same name, but is just one of two books that involves the lead detective, indicating a season 2 is possible.

Speaking withDecider, Lawrence explained howhe hopesBad Monkeycan stick around until season 3, much like his previous comedy for the streamer,Ted Lasso. The creative revealed plans to adapt Hiaasen’sRazor Girlnext, which features the return of Detective Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) as a new mystery unfolds. However, he lamented that, if a season 3 were to happen, they’d need to craft an original story, which he’s unsure of wanting to do. Check out what Lawrence had to say below:

Vince [Vaughn] and I went into this when we sold to Apple saying we’d love to do three. We have a three-season arc in our head, the next book,Razor Girl, we own it. And Carl [Hiaasen]’s such a good writer. I don’t think he’s — rarely if ever — written sequels to his novels where that character stayed alive. So the only thing that makes me nervous is if we do three seasons, that means I have to make up one on my own. And Carl, he’s a high bar, man.

The Show Can Easily Come Back If Apple TV+ Deems It Successful Enough

Given that season 1 of the show ended with the mystery and conflict surrounding Nick (Rob Delaney) and Eve Stripling’s (Meredith Hagner) insurance fraud coming to a close, much of thecast ofBad Monkeylikely won’t come back for a sequel. However, sinceRazor Girlstill sees Yancy in an important role, the book would be the perfect continuationdespite the lack of many cast members from the first installment. It would also bridge the gap for Lawrence’s plans through season 3, indicating his full storyline idea could come to fruition.

Vince Vaughn’s New Crime Show Has Potential To Become Apple TV+’s Version Of The Knives Out Franchise

The Knives Out movies function very well on their own or as part of a franchise, and Bad Monkey’s source material could allow for that same formula.

Given that Lawrence’s last Apple TV+ show,Ted Lasso, ended in season 3,it would make sense forBad Monkeyto also follow a similar fate.Shrinkingseason 2is also continuing his other series starting October 16, with plans for a season 3 that would end that show as well. Given his series seem to last for the same number of seasons, the critical success of his Hiaasen adaptation means there’s a strong chance it could get renewed. Since he already has a story mapped out for the show, it could mean his whole vision will eventually coalesce.

The Show Could Become A Semi-Anthology Series

Since Lawrence has plans forBad Monkeythat extend even beyond Hiaasen’s novels, it’s possible the series could become a semi-anthology, featuring Yancy investigating a new mystery every season. Doing so could even extend the show beyond season 3, especially if the original author were to be brought aboard to help guide the show in a particular direction. Since the series is already doing so well for Apple TV+, it wouldn’t be surprising if another installment was announced in the near future.

Bill Lawrence is also the creator of the showsSpin City, Scrubs, andGround Floor.
