The director teases that fire, specifically, represents things like “hatred” and “violence,” and the subtitle as a whole certainly seems to have fairly dark implications for lead characters like Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the rest of the Sully family. Check out Cameron’s explanation below:
“Fire can represent hatred, violence, trauma, possible misuse of power. There’s a lot of thematic stuff. What does ash represent? In my mind, ash represents the aftermath of all of that energy, which is grief and having to live with what you’ve done. This film goes much deeper on our characters and [the] deep emotional consequences for them that threatens their relationships, tests their bonds.”

Avatar: Fire & Ash Could Be The Darkest Entry In The Franchise Yet
What’s Next For The Sully Family In Avatar 3?
BothAvatarmovies thus far have featured dark, serious moments, and scenes of extreme loss. The destruction of Hometree in the first movie, for example, and the Tulkun hunt in the sequel, were both fairly devastating.Avatar: The Way of Water’s endingalso includes the death of Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), a stark reminder of the stakes that the Sully family is facing and the franchise’s capacity for tragic events.
Cameron’s latest tease, however, suggestsAvatar: Fire & Ashcould be the franchise’sEmpire Strikes Back.Neteyam’s death seems likely to weigh on Jake and Neytiri moving forwardand could strain their bond as feelings of guilt and anger come to the surface. The personal struggles of the mainAvatarcharacterswill play out as humanity doubles down on attempts to take over Pandora and a dangerous new Na’vi clan is introduced.

Casting 10 Recurring James Cameron Actors For Avatar’s Next 3 Sequels
James Cameron will be continuing to direct the Avatar movies into the future, and these 10 frequent collaborators should join the franchise.
It was previously confirmed thatAvatar: Fire & Ashwill introduce a Na’vi clan called the Ash People. This new clan will complicate the human versus Na’vi narrative of the first two movies, and they’ve been said to be more antagonistic. Concept art shown at D23 seemingly reinforces their less-than-friendly nature. It remains to be seen how the Sully family’s journey will play out inAvatar: Fire & Ash, but it’s certainly looking like dark and violent days could be ahead for them.
Actor Oona Chaplin joined theAvatar: Fire & Ashcast as Varang, the leader of the Ash People clan.
