8Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier First Introduced The Scarlet Witch To The MCU

Although 2014’sCaptain America: The Winter Solderhad very little to do with magic, it is still an important movie in the MCU’s history when considering the history of magic and its connection to the Scarlet Witch.Elizabeth Olsen debuted as Wanda Maximoff inCaptain America: The Winter Soldier’spost-credits scene, alongside her brother,Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. This kick-started her entire journey in the MCU, and introduced Wanda’s Chaos Magic to the franchise for the first time.

Captain America: The Winter Soldierintrinsically connected theScarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the MCUto HYDRA. While Wanda’s abilities were later revealed to have been natural, as Agatha describes her as a"baby witch,“her and Pietro’s exposure to the Mind Stone during HYDRA experiments on Sokovian citizens enhanced their abilities massively. This set them up to be villains from their very first appearance in the MCU, as they showed a willingness to side with HYDRA for a purpose they didn’t even know.

7Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

The Scarlet Witch Joined The Avengers & Met Vision In Age Of Ultron

After their brief debut inCaptain America: The Winter Soldier, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff became actual villains in action in 2015’sAvengers: Age of Ultron. Initially, they tried to fight off the Avengers' attack on HYDRA’s Sokovia stronghold, but the twins soon joined forces with thetyrannical artificial intelligence Ultron, spurred on by their vendetta against Tony Stark.A Stark missile had destroyed their home as children, and another had threatened to kill them, but didn’t explode, possibly because of Wanda inadvertently using her magic.

James Spader was recently confirmed to be returning to voice Ultron in the MCU’s upcomingVisionseries, the nextWandaVisionspinoff afterAgatha All Along. There is also speculation that Elizabeth Olsen will return in theVisionseries, too, perhaps reuniting her with Ultron.

Agatha All Along Showrunner Jac Schaeffer Reveals Inspirations & Relationships From New MCU Show

Agatha All Along showrunner and director Jac Schaeffer chats about creating the next installment in the WandaVision trilogy for Kathryn Hahn.

Despite their vendetta against Tony Stark, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver swap sides when they learn about Ultron’s real plan for humanity - extinction. They join forces with the Avengers, andWanda gets plenty of opportunities to show off her incredible powers, tearing Ultron drones apart, and eventually even ripping out Ultron’s own heart. Pietro losing his life in the battle is a crucial moment in theScarlet Witch’s MCU timeline, leading to her becoming an Avenger, but adding to the grief that would eventually transform her into a villain.

6Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Captain America: Civil War Hinted At The Scarlet Witch’s Evolution Into A Villain

2016’sCaptain America: Civil Warwas perhaps the most overt tease of theScarlet Witch becoming a villain in the MCU’s future. This was especially true during the Avengers' battle at the Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, as she urged Clint Barton not to pull his punches, willingly threw cars at Tony Stark, and fought brutally against the likes of Spider-Man and Black Panther. Her actions soon landed her imprisoned in the Raft, which is perhaps an appropriate place for a being as dangerous and unpredictable as the Scarlet Witch.

1 Civil War MCU Moment Proves Wanda Was A Villain Before Doctor Strange 2

Throughout the MCU, there have been signs that Wanda was destined to become a villain, including one telling moment from Captain America: Civil War.

Captain America: Civil Waris especially important in the Scarlet Witch’s evolution, and therefore the story of Agatha Harkness and her upcoming series, because it also showed Wanda Maximoff living a normal life. Despite the controversy of her actions in Lagos, and the ensuing Civil War, Wanda had lived comfortably prior to the movie in Avengers HQ and had formed a romance withPaul Bettany’s synthezoid, Vision. Wanda wanted this normality back in subsequent projects, which led to the events ofAvengers:Infinity War, WandaVisionandDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

5Doctor Strange (2016)

Doctor Strange Revealed A Lot More About Magic In The MCU

As well as harking back to the Scarlet Witch’s history in the MCU,Agatha All Alongwill also expand the world of magic significantly. This will add to the mythology that truly started to be developed in 2016’sDoctor Strange, which introduced Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular surgeon-come-Master of the Mystic Arts, and other sorcerers such as the Ancient One, Mordo, Kaecilius and Wong.Doctor Strangedemonstrated the unlimited potential ofmagic in the MCU, and its ability to create weird and wonderfully cinematic moments.

Doctor Strange and the Masters of the Mystic Arts use Eldritch Magic in the MCU, while the Scarlet Witch and other witches, including Agatha Harkness, use a different kind, with the Scarlet Witch using Chaos Magic, the most powerful kind.

The Scarlet Witch has certainly taken advantage of this idea in her appearances sinceDoctor Strangeexpanded the world of magic. Agatha Harkness and her new coven are set to continue this on their much anticipated journey down the Witches' Road - introducing another piece of magical lore to the MCU. Doctor Strange is widely regarded as one of the most powerful sorcerers on Earth, but the likes of Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness put him to shame, despite everything he’s learned over the years.

4Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Avengers: Infinity War Showed Just How Powerful The Scarlet Witch Is

Wanda Maximoff played a huge role inAvengers: Infinity War, though she actively tried to avoid getting into direct battle against Thanos and his forces. Instead, her relationship with Vision was the most important thing to her, but when Vision became seriously injured, things became more personal.Wanda began to tease the full extent of her power inInfinity War, easily throwing Thanos' huge machines around and battling Proxima Midnight, but her true power wasn’t seen until theend ofInfinity War, when she destroyed an Infinity Stone.

Not only did Wanda Maximoff have the power to literally obliterate the Mind Stone, but she was able to do this while also using her powers to try and hold back Thanos, who was, at that time, the most powerful being in the universe. This was an incredibly impressive feat from Wanda, though it ultimately turned out to be futile, as Thanos simply turned back time. Even so, the factWanda could use Chaos Magicto destroy an Infinity Stone is something that shouldn’t be forgotten when heading intoAgatha All Along.

3Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Avengers: Endgame Led Directly Into The Events Of WandaVision

Although she appeared only briefly inAvengers: Endgame, having been returned by the remaining Avengers following the five-year-long Blip, Wanda Maximoff still made an impact during the Battle of Earth. She showed off even more of her strength, being able to easily take on Thanos one-on-one, thwarting his attacks with his sword, and even coming close to tearing the Mad Titan to shreds. The only thing that stopped her was Thanos ordering his ships to fire on the Battlefield. Had this not happened, Wanda could have easily killed him singlehandedly.

Why Scarlet Witch Couldn’t Beat Thanos Despite Her Ridiculous Phase 4 Powers

Phase 4’s Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, yet Wanda could not beat Thanos in either Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame.

This spar was certainly fueled by the anger and grief of losing Vision, which only happened moments prior in Wanda Maximoff’s mind. The fact that her grief seemed to increase her power is an important thing to remember when watchingWandaVisionback and when heading intoAgatha All Along. It’s very possible that Agatha Harkness may express some grief in her upcoming series, which could see her power become even stronger.Endgame’semotional ending set the stage forWandaVisionperfectly.

2WandaVision (2021)

Kathryn Hahn Made Her Debut As Agatha Harkness In WandaVision

WandaVisionis perhaps the most important project to watch prior toAgatha All Along, most notably because the 2021 Disney+ series first introduced Kathryn Hahn to the MCU as Agatha Harkness. Originally, Agatha had masqueraded as Agnes, the nosy neighbor inWanda Maximoff’s fabricated sitcom-style world surrounding Westview, New Jersey.Agatha tried to learn as much as she could about Wanda, and even sent a fake Pietro Maximoff, played by Evan Peters, to infiltrate the Maximoff home, though he turned out to be actor and mysterious FBI witness Ralph Bohner.

WandaVisionalso debuted Billy and Tommy Maximoff in the MCU, Wanda and Vision’s children who are expected to be reincarnated in the MCU’s future. Billy Kaplan, the reincarnation of Billy Maximoff, is rumored to be played byHeartstopper’sJoe Locke inAgatha All Along.

Agatha eventually revealed herself to Wanda, and used her magic to send the pair on a journey through Wanda’s history. Inadvertently, this allowed Wanda to make some sort of peace with her troubled life and embrace her identity as the Scarlet Witch, prophesied to either rule or destroy the world. As punishment, Wanda casts a spell on Agatha, trapping her in her Westview disguise of Agnes, and this is whereAgatha All Alongwill find her, powerful and unsure of who she actually is and what she is capable of.

1Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022)

The Scarlet Witch’s Sacrifice May Have Huge Repercussions For Agatha Harkness

Released in May 2022,Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessis the most recent MCU project to explore magic and the Scarlet Witch, setting the stage forAgatha All Alongto continue the story. After losing everything once again inWandaVision, Wanda Maximoff used theDarkhold, taken from Agatha Harkness, to learn how to explore the multiverse, hoping to get her sons, Billy and Tommy, back. This led to an intense battle against Doctor Strange, America Chavez and Earth-838’s Illuminati, before she learned the error of her ways and sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold.

Thedeath of the Scarlet Witchis expected to play a huge role inAgatha All Along. While Elizabeth Olsen isn’t thought to be appearing herself,Agatha All Along’strailers have teased ghostly hints towards the Scarlet Witch, and the series will see Wanda’s spell on Agatha fromWandaVisionbecome twisted following her demise. There is some speculation thatAgatha All Alongcould revive the Scarlet Witch, perhaps at the end of the Witches' Road, but either way, the series will no doubt be informed by the last decade of magical storytelling in the MCU.
