A new Korean crime thriller has become popular onNetflix. The streaming service is known for its original movies and television series, many of which have become defining hits of the streaming era. This includes the 1980s-set sci-fi-fantasy seriesStranger Things(which has won 12 Emmys), theAddams FamilyreimaginingWednesday(which stars Jenna Ortega), the Taron Egerton-led TSA thrillerCarry-On(which is the third most-watched English-language movie ever on the platform), and the Regency era romanceBridgerton(which is based on the Julia Quinn novel series of the same name).

In addition to its English-language content,Netflix also boasts a variety of international offerings. Some of its most popular regional series and movies come from South Korea, including the smash hit dystopian thrillerSquid Game. At the time of writing,Squid Gameseason 1is the most-watched season of any series in any language on Netflix, with more than 2.2 billion hours viewed. Bogotá: City of the Lostis rising on a major streaming chart. The newKorean Netflix movieis not an original title for the platform, having been produced by Watermelon Pictures and Idioplan and distributed in theaters in December 2024, earning roughly $2.7 million at the box office. Directed by Kim Seong-je (Minority Opinion) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Hwang Seong-gu (Anarchist from Colony),the crime drama follows the 19-year-old Guk-hee(Song Joong-ki), who becomes involved in the Colombian black market after his family moves to Bogotá from South Korea.

Song Joong-ki is known for his roles inSpace Sweepers,Vincenzo,Descendants of the Sun, andSungkyunkwan Scandal.

Netflixhas now calculated their Top 10 list of the most-watched non-English movies for the week of February 3 through February 9.Bogotá: City of the Lost, which dropped on the platform on February 3, has topped the chart at No. 1 with 13 million viewers accumulating a total of 23.1 million viewing hours. This makes itthe No. 2 movie on the platform in any language, behind only the Amy Schumer comedyKinda Pregnant, which had 25.1 million viewers.

Bogotáis in the Top 10 in 73 territoriesand No. 1 in 10 of them, namely its country of origin, South Korea, the country where it is set, Colombia, and Venezuela, Morocco, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Oman, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

The Movie Has Found Its Audience

Thanks to its arrival onNetflix,Bogotá: City of the Losthas finally been able to connect with a worldwide audience after only being released in theaters in South Korea. In addition to becoming a streaming hit in its home territory, it has found viewers on every continent but Antarctica (which does not have Netflix). It remains to be seen if theKorean crime dramacontinues charting, at which pointit might become popular enough to earn a sequel, but for the time being it is succeeding in a way it never has before.
